20 Minuten was launched in Zürich in 1999 by Schibsted and was acquired by the Swiss media company Tamedia in 2005. At first 20 Minuten was only distributed in the German-speaking part of Switzerland but in 2006, French-speaking editions (20 Minutes) were launched and in 2011 an Italian-speaking edition was launched (20 Minuti).The average circulation of 20 Minuten is 709,851, reaching over 2 million readers.

The websites attracts a mass audience of over 6.7 million a month, generating a 100 million page views.
